Govt. allocates Rs. 10 m to buy pumpkins Featured

With the purchasing price of pumpkins falling to as low as Rs. 5 per kilo, mainly farmers in Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and Matale are in a state of helplessness.

They say they had to spend between Rs. 35 and Rs. 42 to produce a kilo, due to high costs of agrochemicals and fertilizers and to irrigate the land during the recent drought.

Agriculture minister P. Harrison says the government has decided to purchase pumpkin from farmers at Rs. 30 per kilo.

A sum of Rs. 10 million has been allocated for the purpose, he says.
