Heavy rains ending dry spell (pics)

Heavy rains were experienced in the Central Hills catchment areas of the Mausakele and Castlereigh reservoirs today (05), ending the months long dry spell.

Accordingly, heavy rains were experienced in Hatton, Bogawanthalawa, Maskeliya and Nallathanniya catchment areas.

Due to the dry weather spell the people in these areas were facing a shortage of drinking water and there was a rapid reduction in the water levels of the Mausakele and Castlereigh reservoirs. The tea and vegetable plantations also suffered adverse effects due to the dry weather.

Heavy rains in Vavuniya

Meanwhile, heavy showers were also experienced in the Vavuniya area ending the severe dry weather experienced in the area.

Dry weather conditions prevailed in Vavuniya over the past two months and with the sudden downpour, many cultivations had been destroyed. Many of the paddy fields which were due to be harvested were destroyed with the heavy showers flooding the fields.
