It was decided in parliament yesterday, to appoint a special committee to investigate if imported milk powder contains pork fat and other harmful chemicals.
Special attention was focussed regarding this issue after MP Buddhika Pathirana revealed in parliament that imported milk powder contains pork far, melamine and other harmful chemicals.
MP Wimal Weerawansa thereafter made a request to appoint a special committee to inquire into this issue as it is something that affects the whole nation.
Leader of the House, Lakshman Kiriella told parliament that it is required to call for a full report from the Consumer Affairs Authority prior to appointing a committee.
Therefore, parliament agreed to call for a report from the CAA regarding this matter.
Local research institutions bribed- Buddhika
Deputy Minister Pathirana told parliament that although the CAA had paid and entrusted a local research institute to examine samples of milk powder in the market, after two weeks the said research institution had refused to examine these samples.
He said this raises suspicion if the milk powder companies had bribed this institution, adding that therefore, a foreign research institution is conducting tests.
