Fmr. LTTE group involved with underworld - Silumina

A special police team had revealed details regarding a group comprising former LTTE cadres who have been engaged in supplying weapons and ammunitions which have been unearthed from the North and East and supplying these weapons to underworld gangs from the South, the Silumina newspaper revealed.

It is reported that this group is being led by an LTTE cadre who had escaped the October 22, 2007 attack on the Air Force camp in Anuradhapura.

The ex-LTTE cadre named Vethan, a former Navy member and another person are said to be in this group. The police have identified 16 others and are measures are underway to arrest them. It is also believed that several police officers are also involved with this group, while several weapons said to belong to this group had also been recovered.

This group is said to have carried out a shooting attack on the house of a businessman in Athurugiriya on March 25, 2018 on a contract given to them by an underworld leader currently in prison, over the failure of this businessman to pay ransoms to this underworld leader.

This group is also said to be responsible for a murder in Mulleriyawa in 2017, also based on a contract given to them by a prominent underworld figure currently behind bars. The police had, during the recent past, arrested many of this underworld leader’s disciples and recovered over ten weapons including T 56 riffles.

There is suspicion that this gang could be involved in the killing of the two policemen in Vavunathivu, Batticaloa on November 30, last year and extensive investigations are currently underway with regard to this incident.
