Over 2.6 m farmers caught in micro finance debt trap! Featured

Among those engaged in agriculture in Sri Lanka’s 12 agricultural districts, 2,845,000 are caught up in the micro finance debt trap, it is reported. 

The  Convenor of the Polonnaruwa District women’s group who are in trouble due to the micro finances, Kaudulle M.K. Jayatissa said of those caught in the micro finance debt trap 2,490,000 are women.

He noted that the majority of them are mothers from the agricultural areas.

He said that so far around 170 persons who had got into the micro finance debt trap had committed suicide, while the most recent suicide was of Chamara Premakeerthi from Elahara. He was a 30-year-old farmer.
