Petition filed against Madush's arrest

A fundamental rights petition was filed today requesting the Supreme Court to issue a restraining order preventing police to arrest and bring down the organized criminal gang leader Makandure Madush to Sri Lanka.

Madush is currently in Dubai remand prison in the United Arab Emirates.

The petition has been filed by the maternal aunt of Makandure Madush, Wijesekara Sriyani of Suriyawewa. Several officials including the STF commandant, Senior DIG T F Lathiff have been named as respondents.

The petition states that the arrest of Madush is illegal as there is no extradition law between Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.

Several organized criminal gangsters including Makandure Madush and vocalist Amal Perera and his son Nadimal Perera were arrested by police in Dubai during a party held at a hotel on February 5th. Authorities in Dubai have remanded the suspects on narcotic charges until March 28th.
