Police have recovered Rs. 140,000 and 07 bottles of perfume stolen from foreigners in the procession of the suspects. The two suspects were ordered to be produced before the Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela on March 16 and remanded until March 25, 2019.
The Magistrate further instructed Hikkaduwa Police to investigate the case and submit the progress report.
The suspects were identified as Welikottage Saman Kumara Lal De Silva (27) of Boosa and Isuru Kosala, 25, a resident of Rathgama.
The suspects were arrested by the police when they were travelling by unregistered motor vehicle on the 16th. The two suspects had thus entered the small Villa Hotels in Hikkaduwa and had stolen money, jewelry and other valuable items.
The first suspect is a married man and have a child, Hikkaduwa Police said. The suspects obtain motor cars on rental basis and use them for wrongdoing. It has also been divulged that they cheat women. Tourists staying in several hotels in Hikkaduwa have lodged a complaint with Hikkaduwa Police over the past few months that money and goods had been robbed. The tourists have complained that the complaints are not being given due attention by the authorities. The Hikkaduwa Police stated that most of the tourists who had made such complaints have left Sri Lanka before ending their planned tour. More than 10 complaints have been received on stolen items from tourists so far, Hikkaduwa Police say.
The Hikkaduwa Acting OIC Inspector Dinesh Nishantha de Silva, Sub Inspector Priyantha, Police Sergeants Mahinda (7449) and Silva (77782), Police Constables Wijekoon (91220) and Namal (60450) arrested the suspects and produced them before the courts.
