Dye blamed for deaths of 4 heart surgery patients Featured

Minister Rajitha Senaratne has instructed the Medical Supplies Division to suspend the supply of a dye following the death of four of the six patients who underwent heart surgery at the Colombo National Hospital on November 28.

Preliminary investigations into their deaths point to the dye ‘non-ionic contrast media for cardio-angiography for adult – 100ml’, used during the surgeries, being responsible.

The Drug Regulatory Authority is inquiring into the use of this dye, imported from Europe and issued to the CNH as well as hospitals in Moneragala, Jaffna, Karapitiya, Colombo South, Badulla, Kurunegala, Kalutara and Peradeniya.

The MSU has instructed hospital directors not to use the dye with the same batch no. as that was used at the CNH.

On the minister’s instructions, a three member committee comprising Dr. Lakshmi C. Somathunga, J.H.M.K.K.B. Kamal Jayasinghe and Rohana de Silva is investigating the deaths of the patients.
